Tired of having deliveries stolen from your front porch? You’re in good company: According to a survey done in 2017, almost 26 million Americans say they’ve had a package stolen from a porch or doorstep—and that’s just during the holidays. Some porch pirates are just not-so-honest neighbors, and some actually cruise around neighborhoods, looking for packages to snatch. Here are some ways to protect your home and keep your packages safe.
The US Postal Service, FedEx, UPS, and Amazon all allow you to track your packages from the retailer to your doorstep. Certain services, like the postal service’s Informed Delivery app, will text or email you once a package is delivered. If you know you have a package on the way, try using these tools to keep abreast of where it is, and try to be home on its delivery date.
Another great way to thwart porch pirates is to have packages delivered to your office instead of your home. Commercial security systems are often tougher and stronger than those of residential homes. Commercial buildings also often have surveillance cameras placed both inside and outside and facility.
If there is a FedEx or UPS outlet convenient to your commuting route, another option is to pick up your package directly from the deliverer. FedEx will hold your package for pickup at one of its FedEx Office locations or at Walgreens. Packages sent via UPS can be picked up at a UPS facility, diverted to a UPS Store, or even delivered on a day that’s more convenient for you.
Porch pirates are most likely to strike when they see a package sitting out in the open. If thieves can’t see a package from the street, they’re far less likely to walk up to grab it. Installing a wooden or vinyl fence around your property will both obscure your home from trespassers, and prevent them from crossing your property lines. You could also request that the package be left at the back door instead of the front.
Security cameras and video doorbells won’t prevent thieves from coming onto your property, but they will help you gather evidence which you can use to stop them from coming back. If the thief is a routine offender, you might even prevent him or her from targeting other homeowners!
